The Square Knot

The square knot like the half hitch can be knotted in an amazing number of variations and like the half hitch we are only going to cover a couple of ways of doing it.

Square knot The square knot is tied by taking the right (red) knotting cord and passing it over the two core cords. Now take the left (blue) knotting cord and pass it over the right then under the core cords and up through and over the right hand knotting cord. This first half of the square knot is called a half knot and a series of these knots will cause the band to spiral to the left. Now take the right hand knotting cord (red), which is now on the left, and bring it over the core cords to the right and pass the left hand knotting cord (blue), which is now on the right, over the red knotting cord, under the core cords and up through and over the red cord on the left. Pull tight and push up.

You now know 2 of the four basic macramé knots. The other 2 are the double half hitch and the vertical half hitch. To find out more about these knots and macramé in general you can check out these references from the library or these Links.
